Andrius Arutiunian and Saodat Ismailova’s Exhibition “Recurse ❍”
KKKC presents the exhibition “Recurse ❍” by internationally acclaimed artists Andrius Arutiunian and Saodat Ismailova. For the first time in Klaipėda, these artists – kindred spirits in creativity – explore interwoven themes. The exhibition runs from October 10 to December 31. It invites visitors to immerse themselves in the mythology of the worlds created by Arutiunian and Ismailova, related to themes such as Eastern cosmology, including Zoroastrianism, folk knowledge, alternative dimensions of time, esotericism, life in the face of death, the forces of nature, and the transformative effects of resource extraction on Earth.
In the exhibition “Recurse ❍”, the circle is used in two ways – both as a recurring motif and as a cipher. With the acceleration of planetary life cycles, different historical trajectories collide and overlap, highlighting the nonlinear dynamics of cultural memory. The exhibition features sound and moving image installations that aim to capture elements existing on the brink of extinction. These works reveal devastated fictitious and ancient landscapes, shaped by the ideologies that created them, telling tales of unequal distributions of life.
At the same time, they reveal how life can persist after the conditions enabling it have disappeared and how death quietly lurks deep beneath the world of the living. In the worlds created by Arutiunian and Ismailova, contemporary life and modern belief systems merge with ancestral knowledge and ancient rituals, resulting in undefined chronologies. In Ismailova’s film “Melted Into the Sun”, the voice-over tells us: “Every new cycle seems shorter than the previous one. Eternity has become temporary, and temporality is our legacy.” Andrius Arutiunian is an artist and composer of Armenian-Lithuanian descent, working with hybrid listening forms, folk knowledge, and contemporary variations of cosmology. In his research, he experiments with deep time perception, non-Western epistemologies, and alternative methods of world order creation.
