Seniors’ Thursdays at KKKC

Klaipėda Culture Communication Center (KKKC) led by renowned watercolor painter Liuda Liaudanskaite organizes Seniors’ Thursdays for (non)artistic seniors. On the last Thursdays of each month, active seniors travel to experience culture at Klaipėda’s art institutions and beyond. Exhibitions, events, educational activities, meetings with famous people, trips to neighboring cities, gatherings in cafes and genuine human connections – all of this happens on Seniors’ Thursdays in Klaipėda. Watercolor painter Liuda Liaudanskaite, who founded this initiative, says that when she retired, she thought she would enjoy complete freedom and unlimited time, but after that happened, she missed commitment to people and especially socializing. Eventually, encouraged by friends, she ended up at KKKC administration and began gathering seniors for joint cultural activities. “We’ve been buzzing around Klaipėda’s cultural life since autumn 2023 without breaks. Because exhibitions don’t take holidays!” says Liuda. According to her, exhibitions often transform into educational activities and conversations in cafes. “Some people dropped out, but a core group of about 10 people remained. We’ve all become close, know a lot about each other, and bring our friends.” Mostly women participate, but some seniors also come, accompanying their ladies, or on their own. People come from various walks of life: not only artists, but also a pharmacist, an accountant, a sailor’s wife who started painting after retirement, a poet’s widow. Seniors share recommendations about cinema, theater, and literature, exchange plants, celebrate birthdays – traditions are emerging. During summer there will be no breaks and seniors will continue to meet on the last Thursday of each month at KKKC Exhibition Halls around 11–12 a.m. (time is adjusted each time by mutual agreement).
